Musalla Minarets of Herat

Facts and practical information
The Musalla Minarets of Herat stand as a testament to the rich history and architectural brilliance of Afghanistan. These towering structures, once part of a grand madrasa complex built by Queen Gawhar Shad in the 15th century, have withstood the test of time and conflict, now serving as a poignant reminder of Herat's storied past.
Though the complex was largely destroyed by the British in the late 19th century and further damaged by subsequent wars, the minarets have resiliently endured. Approximately five minarets remain, with the tallest reaching about 55 meters into the sky. Their intricate tile work, featuring geometric patterns and calligraphy, showcases the craftsmanship of Timurid architecture.
Visitors to Herat can marvel at the beauty of the surviving minarets, which continue to dominate the city's skyline. Despite the challenges of preservation and the threats of natural decay, the Musalla Minarets remain an iconic sight in Afghanistan, emblematic of the country's cultural and historical heritage.
