Arch of Trajan
Facts and practical information
The Arch of Trajan stands as a testament to the ancient grandeur of Roman architecture in the heart of Timgad, Algeria. Erected in the 2nd century A.D. under Emperor Trajan, this triumphal arch was built to symbolize Roman authority and the victory of imperial power.
Located at the intersection of the cardo (north-south street) and decumanus (east-west street), the arch was strategically positioned at the entrance to the city, serving both a decorative and functional purpose. It was part of the original city plan of Timgad, which was founded by Emperor Trajan as a military colony to serve as a bastion against the Berbers in the Aures Mountains.
The arch is renowned for its classical Roman design, featuring well-preserved Corinthian columns and a central archway framed by two smaller side arches. The structure is adorned with intricate carvings and inscriptions that glorify the emperor and depict scenes of Roman conquests and deities.
