Walk along Avenida Alvear:, Buenos Aires
Facts and practical information
The Teatro Presidente Alvear is located in the San Nicolás neighborhood of the City of Buenos Aires, precisely on Avenida Corrientes 1659, and is one of the theaters dependent on the Secretariat of Culture of that city.
It was inaugurated on April 22nd, 1942, and was named after the former Argentine president Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear. Its owner was Pascual Carcavallo, an important theatrical entrepreneur who gave great impetus to the Argentine theater. The first play premiered in the theatre was "Eclipse de sol", by Enrique García Velloso, performed by the Compañía Argentina de Comedia. In 1951 the Municipality of the City of Buenos Aires withdrew the concession of the theatre from Carcavallo's heirs, renaming it "Enrique Santos Discépolo". This measure was revoked in 1955 and the theatre remained in the hands of the heirs until 1980, when it became part of the Secretariat of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires.
It has a capacity for 861 spectators, distributed in a stalls with capacity for 313 people, a pullman sector with 250 seats, a tertulia for 168 spectators and three sectors of boxes with 132 seats in total. The simple foyer is kept in its original style of rationalist sobriety, although it is illuminated with classic style chandeliers.
In May 2014 the theatre was closed for renovations.
On August 28, 2018, at 2:30 a.m. the marquee, some billboards and the outside of the hall caught fire.
