The Museum of Memory is a municipal museum located in the city of Rosario that deals mainly with political violence and state terrorism in Argentina in the 1970s and 1980s. It is a space where the memory of men and women, protagonists and witnesses of the years of the last military dictatorship in Argentina is safeguarded.
Created in 1998 through an ordinance of the Municipal Council of Rosario, with the aim of promoting access to knowledge and research on the situation of human rights and social and political memory in our region, in the country and in Latin America. Its patrimony includes diverse material that informs about human rights violations in Latin America and the world, especially about the actions of State terrorism during the last civil-military dictatorship in Argentina.
It has been operating since December 2010, in its definitive location - the former headquarters of the II Army Corps Command, which was used on occasions to house the courts martial of many victims of State terrorism.
The Museum offers the public a permanent exhibition room, with works designed by outstanding artists of the city of Rosario, and another one for temporary exhibitions. It also has a documentary center, a specialized library with more than 3,500 volumes and periodical publications, an educational extension area, an auditorium with capacity for more than 120 people, among other services.
The Museum of Memory of Rosario is one of the pioneering institutions in Latin America in the treatment of post-genocide memories and has managed to become a true reference of its kind in the national and international scene.
This is evidenced in the agreements and collaboration agreements signed with academic institutions in the country and abroad as well as with institutions working in different parts of Latin America and Europe in pursuit of the reconstruction of memories of post-genocide periods.
The Museum is the first in Argentina to be recognized of national interest and one of the first in Latin America to work on the causes and consequences of the actions of the authoritarian State on civilian populations.
He is a member of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, the Federal Network of Sites of Memory, under the National Secretariat of Human Rights, and the Network of Latin American and Caribbean Sites of Memory, among other institutions.
