Parque General Juan Gregorio de Las Heras, Buenos Aires
Facts and practical information
Las Heras Park is a public park located in the neighborhood of Palermo on its borders with Barrio Norte and Recoleta, all in the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
This relatively new park, with an area of almost 12 hectares, is bounded by General Las Heras and Coronel Díaz Avenues, and Jerónimo Salguero and Juncal Streets.
The National Penitentiary, which had been built between 1872 and 1876, operated on the land where it is located until 1962. In 1961 its demolition began. On June 12, 1956, in the old penitentiary on Las Heras Street, General Juan José Valle, leader of the frustrated civic-military uprising of June 9 against the government of General Pedro Eugenio Aramburu, was shot. Aramburu had assumed the de facto government on November 13, 1955, after the self-styled "Liberating Revolution", which overthrew Juan Domingo Perón in September of the same year.
In 2008, by decree 2388/2008 signed by former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, the place was declared a National Historic Site. The place where the shooting took place on the grounds of the former National Penitentiary is marked with granite blocks and two plaques with the names of all the fallen in those days. In 2014 the Buenos Aires Legislature approved a draft resolution of María Rosa Muiños that establishes the placement of a memorial plaque.
