Cerro Pan de Azúcar
Facts and practical information
Cerro Pan de Azúcar is a mountain located in the Sierras Chicas, province of Córdoba, Argentine Republic.
It has a height of 1.290 m.a.s.l. in its summit it has a cross of great dimensions and a chairlift, of little more than 1000 m to ascend to the top of the hill. It receives the name Pan de Azúcar for its conical form, since in the past the sugar loaves of great dimensions were conical. The name given by the native people to this hill was Supaj-ñuñu, which means virgin's bosom, because from certain angles of observation, it has that shape.
The gentle slopes are largely covered by dense stunted forest. During the coldest winter days, there may occasionally be precipitation in the form of snow.
From the top of this hill, and towards the west, you can appreciate a great part of the centre and south of the Punilla Valley. On the western slope, at the foot of this hill, stands the city of Cosquín, and on the eastern slope, Villa Allende. The cities of Mendiolaza, Unquillo and the city of Córdoba can also be seen. The hill is crossed by the provincial route RP E-54, which leads to the east to Villa Allende and Cosquín to the west. For some years, this route was used as a classification section in important rally competitions such as the World Rally Championship, the Argentinean Rally Championship and the Cordoba Rally Championship. Some call it "The Cathedral of the Rally of Argentina", however, later it was no longer used due to the high environmental impact that this type of events produced on the environment.
This road was built in 1931, during the presidency of José Félix Uriburu, and was named 6 de Septiembre, after the date in 1930 when the coup d'état against the democratic president Hipólito Yrigoyen was carried out. It has an extension of little more than 20 km and you can access to the top of the hill thanks to the chairlift, which starts from a stop at 1,010 meters above sea level, and reaches 1,290 meters above sea level.
