Plaza 9 de Julio is a public square in the city of Salta, located in northwestern Argentina. The square is named 9 de Julio in commemoration of Argentina's independence day and is the founding site of the city.
It is the political, social and commercial center of the city of Salta and is surrounded by Mitre, España, Zuviría and Caseros streets. In its surroundings are several of the main monuments and points of interest: the Cabildo of Salta, the Cathedral of Salta, the MAAM, the America Cultural Center and the Provincial Theater.
A particularity that distinguishes it from other Argentine squares is that the surrounding area is almost entirely intact. Its preservation and that of the surrounding historic center is due to more than twenty resolutions, most of them enacted during the 1990's. The square has more than 250 specimens of different tree species and more than 7000 dwarf flower seedlings.
