Tsitsernakaberd, Yerevan

Tsitsernakaberd is a poignant memorial complex located on a hilltop overlooking the city of Yerevan, Armenia. This solemn site is dedicated to the memory of the 1.5 million Armenians who perished in the Armenian Genocide, which began in 1915. The complex serves as both a museum and a memorial, attracting visitors from around the world who come to pay their respects and learn about the tragic events.

The centerpiece of Tsitsernakaberd is the Genocide Monument, which consists of a 44-meter stele symbolizing the national rebirth of Armenians. Surrounding the stele are twelve slabs positioned in a circle, representing the twelve lost provinces in present-day Turkey. In the center of the circle lies an eternal flame, which burns in memory of those who were killed.

Adjacent to the monument is the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute. Opened in 1995, the museum provides a comprehensive history of the genocide through photographs, documents, and personal testimonies. The exhibits are both informative and moving, designed to educate visitors about the atrocities and ensure that the lessons of the past are not forgotten.

The site is also home to a well-tended park and the Alley of Trees, which has been planted by various world leaders and dignitaries who have visited the memorial to pay homage to the victims.
