Khor Virap, Lusarat
Facts and practical information
Nestled in the shadow of Mount Ararat, Khor Virap stands as a significant landmark in the spiritual and historical landscape of Armenia. This ancient monastery, located near the town of Lusarat, is one of the country's most sacred sites and a pivotal destination for pilgrims and tourists alike.
Khor Virap, which translates to "deep dungeon," is deeply rooted in Armenia's adoption of Christianity. According to legend, Saint Gregory the Illuminator, the patron saint and first official head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, was imprisoned in the dungeon at this location for 13 years by King Tiridates III of Armenia. Miraculously surviving this ordeal, Saint Gregory later converted the king to Christianity in 301 AD, leading to Armenia becoming the first nation to embrace Christianity as its state religion.
Today, the monastery complex that sits atop the pit where Saint Gregory was imprisoned is a testament to Armenia's enduring faith. Visitors can descend into the pit themselves, experiencing a profound connection to the country's past. The main church, Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), dates back to the 17th century and is adorned with intricate khachkars (cross-stones) and religious iconography that reflect the rich heritage of Armenian ecclesiastical art.
Khor Virap's location also offers breathtaking views of Mount Ararat, the national symbol of Armenia, which lies just across the border in Turkey. The monastery's proximity to this iconic mountain adds to its allure, making it a picturesque spot for photography and contemplation.
For the average tourist, Khor Virap is accessible and offers a blend of historical intrigue and spiritual solemnity. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes for walking and to dress modestly when visiting the monastery, as it is a place of worship. The site is open year-round, though the best time to visit is during the warmer months when the weather is more conducive for exploring the grounds and enjoying the panoramic vistas.
