Facts About Australian king parrot
The Australian king parrot is a magnificent bird native to the eastern regions of Australia, particularly flourishing in the humid, forested highlands. These parrots primarily feast on fruits and seeds, either plucked from trees or foraged from the ground.
Belonging to the genus Alisterus, this species is divided into two recognized subspecies, distinguished mainly by their size. The adult males are quite striking with their vibrant red and green plumage, while the females and juveniles exhibit a different color pattern.
These parrots can be observed from northern Queensland all the way down to southern Victoria. They often congregate in small groups, sometimes even mingling with other bird species.
In the world of pet birds, Australian king parrots are occasionally bred in Australia and can make very gentle companions if they are hand-raised. They have somewhat discerning tastes and might reject small seeds from typical retail mixes. Although they are not very well-known outside of Australia, these parrots can form strong bonds with their human caretakers and can live up to 25 years in captivity.
