Facts About Zebra top snail
The zebra top snail, scientifically known as Austrocochlea porcata, is a medium-sized marine gastropod belonging to the Trochidae family, commonly referred to as top snails or top shells. This species is renowned for its distinctive shell, which ranges in size from 20 mm to 43 mm and boasts a striking black-and-white banded pattern on a light grey to white background.
At a cursory glance, the zebra top snail bears a strong resemblance to the southern ribbed top snail (Austrocochlea constricta). Historically, they were even considered to be the same species. However, notable differences distinguish them. The zebra top snail has a less dilated aperture (the shell's opening) and lacks the columellar tubercle (a small bump inside the shell) present in the southern ribbed top snail.
This unique snail is native to Australia and can be found along the coasts of Central Queensland, Western Australia, and Tasmania. It thrives in marine environments within these regions, contributing to the natural beauty of the underwater landscape.
