Hobart Zoo, Hobart

Hobart Zoo, once a popular tourist attraction in the heart of Hobart, Australia, used to be home to many wild animals and was a place of relaxation for residents and visitors to the city. Although the zoo no longer operates, its history is still present in the memory of the local community.

Founded in 1923, Hobart Zoo quickly gained fame due to the diversity of its inhabitants – from exotic birds to large cats. However, it was a certain unique animal that brought it the most fame – Benjamin, considered to be the last living Tasmanian tiger. Unfortunately, due to a lack of proper conditions and neglect, the zoo gradually fell into disrepair, and its inhabitants were either relocated to other facilities or died.

The closure of the Hobart Zoo in 1937 was a result of changing social and financial priorities, as well as a growing awareness concerning the protection of animals and their natural habitats. Although the zoo did not stand the test of time, its legacy lives on in the consciousness of Hobart residents as an important part of the city's history.
