Amaras Monastery
Facts and practical information
The Amaras Monastery is one of the oldest Christian worship sites in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, now located on the territory of Azerbaijan. This place bears witness to the long history of Christianity in the area, with its origins dating back to the 4th century.
According to tradition, the monastic foundation was built by St. Gregory the Illuminator and is closely associated with the spread of Christianity in Armenia. The Amaras Monastery was not only an important religious center but also served as a place of education, where Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian alphabet, taught.
Despite multiple destructions and reconstructions over the centuries, the monastic complex has retained its spiritual and historical value to this day. It includes the main church dedicated to St. Gregory and several smaller buildings, which together form a unique architectural ensemble.
