National Heroes Square, Bridgetown
Facts and practical information
National Heroes Square, formerly known as Trafalgar Square, is a historical and cultural landmark located in the heart of Bridgetown, the capital city of Barbados. This public square is a tribute to the prominent figures who have significantly contributed to the island nation's rich history and independence, and it is a focal point for both locals and tourists alike.
The square is marked by the presence of several important monuments and statues. Among them is the statue of Admiral Lord Nelson, predating the more famous Nelson's Column in London, which stands as a testament to the colonial history of the island. However, the square's name change in 1999 to National Heroes Square reflects the country's shift towards celebrating its own national identity and the ten national heroes of Barbados, commemorated every April on National Heroes Day.
In addition to its historical significance, the square is also the site of the Dolphin Fountain, which commemorates the introduction of piped water to Bridgetown. The area is surrounded by other notable landmarks, including the Parliament Buildings of Barbados with their neo-Gothic architecture, and the nearby Chamberlain Bridge, offering picturesque views of the Constitution River, often referred to as The Careenage.
National Heroes Square is not only a place of remembrance; it also serves as a vibrant public space where cultural events and official ceremonies take place throughout the year. It is a part of the historic Bridgetown and its Garrison, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, adding to the square's international significance.
