Théâtre des Martyrs, Brussels
Facts and practical information
The Théâtre des Martyrs is a Brussels theater located at Place des Martyrs. Directed by director Daniel Scahaise between 1998 and 2015, it is now under the artistic direction of director Philippe Sireuil, since January 1, 2016.
Three companies are currently associated with the theater within the framework of a policy of companionship: Théâtre en Liberté, the company Biloxi 48, led by Christine Delmotte-Weber and La Servante, led by Philippe Sireuil.
This theater, built on the site of the former Etoile cinema and inaugurated in 1998, is the first theater built by the French Community Commission of the Brussels-Capital Region, on the initiative of Minister Didier Gosuin.
Before the renovation, it was occupied by the director Henri Ronse.
The theater is decorated with the works of three contemporary Belgian artists: the entrance hall is decorated with a monumental fresco by Pierre Alechinsky: "Handrail", the foyer is lined with a sculpture by Felix Roulin: "Wall, muses and Orpheus" and the stage curtain, painted by Alexander Obolensky, forms a harmony of reds with the large room and its seats.
The Théâtre des Martyrs includes the large 356-seat auditorium and the small auditorium with a variable capacity of 74 to 100 seats, initially intended for rehearsals, conferences and exhibitions, but soon transformed into a performance hall for more intimate productions.
