Théâtre National, Brussels
Facts and practical information
The Théâtre national de la Communauté française is a theatrical institution founded in Brussels in 1945 by Jacques Huisman and René Hainaux.
The National Theatre of Belgium was founded on September 19, 1945 by decree of the Prince Regent. Among its missions: "to contribute to the diffusion of culture, to spread the taste for quality theater, to make Belgian theater known in Belgium and abroad, and to raise the social and professional status of actors". This last mission was confirmed in 1958, when the National Theatre became an "establishment of public utility".
In 1961, the National Theatre of Belgium moved to the Centre Rogier, between the Place Rogier and the Gare du Nord, not far from the Place de Brouckère, in the center of Brussels, in a space specially built for it. The Centre Rogier was to be demolished in 1999, so the TNB left the Place Rogier and moved temporarily to the former Pathé Palace cinema not far from there, before moving, still in the center, to a new building built according to the most recent scenographic criteria on the Boulevard Émile Jacqmain, which was inaugurated on November 16, 2004, and became the "Théâtre national de la Communauté française de Belgique".
The new Théâtre national de la Communauté française de Belgique includes a large auditorium with 750 seats, a small auditorium with 250 seats, a vast foyer on four floors with two bars, a rehearsal room, a sound studio, etc.
Since 2008, the National Theatre has been collaborating regularly with the Koninklijke Vlaamse Schouwburg, its Dutch-language counterpart, located in the same neighbourhood in Brussels.
