The white-lipped mud turtle, a captivating species from the Kinosternidae family, inhabits regions of Central America and parts of northwestern South America. These turtles are indigenous to countries including Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
This species is classified into two subspecies: the Northern white-lipped mud turtle (K. l. leucostomum) and the Southern white-lipped mud turtle (K. l. postinguinale). An intriguing aspect of the species' etymology involves the synonym "Cinosternon spurrelli" which refers to Kinosternon leucostomum postinguinale and honors British zoologist Herbert George Flaxman Spurrell.
