Iglesia de San Lorenzo, Potosí
Facts and practical information
San Lorenzo de Carangas is a church located in the city of Potosí in the homonymous department, According to historians it was formerly called La Anunciación and together with the church of Santa Bárbara were the first churches built in the city. The construction of San Lorenzo "La Anunciación" began in 1548, but a heavy snowfall collapsed the temple ten years later so it had to be repaired. At the arrival of Viceroy Toledo, its name was changed to San Lorenzo de Carangas, because it was destined to the cult of the indigenous Carangas people. When the current cathedral was built, it became a parish of Indians.
However, the biggest remodeling corresponds to the eighteenth century, when the dome was raised and made the baroque-mestizo cover of a vast ornamental richness.
