Sarajevo cable car, Sarajevo
Facts and practical information
Sarajevo, the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, hosts a remarkable attraction, the Sarajevo cable car, also known as the Trebević cable car. This aerial lift connects the historic city with the summit of Mount Trebević, providing not only a mode of transportation but also a tourist experience that offers stunning panoramic views of the city and its surrounding landscapes.
The original cable car was inaugurated in 1959 and quickly became one of Sarajevo's most beloved landmarks. It played an integral role in the 1984 Winter Olympics, ferrying visitors and athletes alike to the mountain's recreational facilities. Unfortunately, the original cable car was destroyed during the siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s conflicts.
After extensive reconstruction efforts, the new Sarajevo cable car reopened to the public in April 2018. The modern system features 33 cabins, each with the capacity to carry ten passengers. The journey from the city to the top of Mount Trebević takes approximately seven and a half minutes, covering a distance of 2.1 kilometers.
The cable car's lower station is situated close to the historic core of Sarajevo, making it easily accessible to tourists and locals. The upper station, positioned near the peak of Mount Trebević, serves as a gateway to nature, offering access to hiking trails, picnic areas, and the remnants of the Olympic bobsleigh and luge track, now a popular site for urban explorers and street artists.
The Sarajevo cable car operates year-round, allowing visitors to experience the changing seasons from a bird's-eye view. Whether blanketed in winter snow or surrounded by the lush greenery of summer, the cable car offers a unique perspective on the city's natural beauty and the scars of its tumultuous history.
