Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, São João del-Rei
Facts and practical information
The Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo is located in Largo do Carmo in the city of São João del-Rei, in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. It is one of the main colonial churches in the city.
Built in the rococo golden age, the church brings innovations of the style: the gate richly decorated with sculptural elements and the octagonal towers slightly set back from the plane of the facade.
The interior features magnificently executed carved woodwork, but without the gilding common to colonial churches in Minas Gerais. In the consistory there is a set of table with eight feet and high-backed chairs in rosewood, typical of the eighteenth century, attributed to the artist Manuel Rodrigues Coelho, who made the chancel, the pulpits and the medallion of the cross arch.
In the chancel there are two canvases by the German painter Georg Grimm. In the central nave an unfinished image of Christ without arms stands out.
A beautiful wrought iron gate frames the entrance to the cemetery near the church.
