Monument to the Expeditionary, Porto Alegre
Facts and practical information
The Monument to the Expeditionary is a historical monument of the city of Porto Alegre, and was inaugurated in 1957. The idea for the monument was launched by the newspaper Correio do Povo in 1946, which led to a public contest for the elaboration of an arch of triumph, where the winner was Antônio Caringi's project, author of the Laçador Statue, Porto Alegre's symbol.
However, the choice divided the jury, which included João Fahrion and Tasso Corrêa, who withdrew in disagreement with Caringi's bold project.
It is a granite structure in the form of a double arch, with sculptures in relief representing soldiers of various weapons, and a bronze statue on the back, an allegorical female figure inspired by statues of Athena, in armor, treading on a serpent, representing, according to Walter Spalding, Victory, or according to the press of the time, Bravery. On the front it bears the inscription "To the Brazilian Expeditionary Force - The Grateful Homeland".
The monument honors the "little soldiers" of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force who fought in World War II. It is located in the Largo General Yeddo J. Blauth, in the Farroupilha Park, in front of the Military School, and serves as a setting for civic ceremonies and Army presentations on commemorative dates.
On Sundays, when the traditional Brique da Redenção takes place, the monument becomes the stage for shows performed by local and national artists.
