Monumento ao General Osório, Porto Alegre
Facts and practical information
The Monument to General Osório is a public monument located at Praça da Alfândega, in downtown Porto Alegre, erected in honor of Manuel Luís Osório, patron of the Brazilian Army Cavalry and hero of the Paraguay War.
Its construction was decided in 1929, when a contest was opened for its elaboration, whose judging commission was led by General Cipriano da Costa Ferreira. The contest originally foresaw the erection of a pedestrian statue, but the rules were changed and the prize increased, making it possible to modify the plans. The winner was the sculptor from Rio de Janeiro, Hildegardo Leão Veloso.
The statue was cast in Rio de Janeiro, and the monument was inaugurated with great celebrations on August 7, 1933, with the presence of several authorities and family members of the honored one. In 1966 a gale toppled the statue, severely damaging it. After it was restored, it returned to its original position.
The monument consists of a large granite base surrounded by a mirror of water, with an equestrian statue of the general on top. On the sides of the base were inscribed phrases of his authorship: "The happiest date of my life would be the one when I was given the news that civilized peoples celebrated their fraternization by burning their arsenals," and "Soldiers! The mission of commanding free men is easy: just show them the path of duty!".
