Facts and practical information
Boa Viagem Beach is the most famous urban beach in the city of Recife, capital of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. With approximately eight kilometers long, it is located in the district with the same name, south of Pernambuco, bordered by Pina Beach to the north and Piedade Beach to the south.
Most of Boa Viagem beach is protected by a barrier reef, which gave the city its name.
In the 17th century, the settlement of Boa Viagem was a resting place for travelers coming from the south of the Capitania of Pernambuco. The beach later became a summer vacation spot for the people from Recife, until the arrival of buildings in the 1940s and 1950s. Such waterfront buildings create shadows on the beach, which raises criticism. The waterfront has a park, garden, and sporting venues.
