The São João River Basin Environmental Protection Area is a sustainable use conservation unit, with about 150 373.03 hectares, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It encompasses ecosystems of the Atlantic Forest, such as the "mata de baixada", mangroves and restinga. Its objective is to regulate land use in the area where the golden lion tamarin occurs.
Covers the entire São João river basin, except urban areas and the Poço das Antas Biological Reserve and União Biological Reserve, which are fully protected areas.
