The Paraná Public Library is a cultural institution located in Curitiba and maintained by the government of Paraná, founded on March 7, 1857 by José Antônio Vaz de Carvalhais, vice-president of the province of Paraná.
It has in its collection more than 470 thousand books, including Braille, besides newspapers, magazines, maps, musical scores, manuscripts, vinyl records, compact discs, videos, cassette tapes, films and slides, among other media. Besides the collection, the institution offers space for exhibitions, book launches, seminars, lectures, literature, plastic arts, and handicraft workshops, film and video screenings, poetry readings, musical presentations, and other cultural events.
Its headquarters has an area of 8.5 thousand m² and was inaugurated by governor Bento Munhoz da Rocha Netto on December 19, 1954, during the celebrations of the "Paraná Political Emancipation Centennial".
There is a regional office of the Copyright Office of the National Library Foundation, where unpublished and published works can be registered.
