Praça Otávio Rocha, Porto Alegre
Facts and practical information
Praça Otávio Rocha is a square in the city of Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
It is located in an area of special cultural interest, according to the Urban and Environmental Development Master Plan, and is part of the city's inventoried assets.
It was formed from the left over expropriations made for the opening and widening of Otávio Rocha Avenue and Alberto Bins Avenue, which resulted in a square of triangular shape at the meeting between the two avenues. It received its current name in honor of Otávio Rocha, through decree 256 of 1932, during Alberto Bins' administration.
At the site there is a monument consisting of a bronze bust of the honored man, sculpted by André Arjonas. The monument was inaugurated on February 28, 1939.
The square has an eclectic style, with paved sidewalks in worked Portuguese stone, having its alignment defined by a masonry balustrade, typical of the urbanization of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Its surroundings are composed of some buildings that date from the time of its urbanization; the rest was consolidated in the 1950s.
