Santuário Sagrado Coração de Jesus, São Paulo
Facts and practical information
The Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a traditional church in the municipality of São Paulo that is located in the Campos Elísios neighborhood, downtown, and belongs to the Catholic Church. Its construction is based on Roman architecture in Basilica format and consists of three naves. It features a statue of Christ the Redeemer, in copper, which decorates the top of its majestic tower and is part of a complex of buildings that contains the Liceu Coração de Jesus, a Salesian high school founded in 1885.
It is the oldest classical-Renaissance style temple in São Paulo and is considered a landmark in the renovation of sacred art in the São Paulo capital, due to the internal decoration influenced by the Salesians. Although its foundation stone was launched in the 19th century, the current configuration of the building was inaugurated in 1901, but only in 1914 it was elevated to the level of Sanctuary.
