Prohodna
Facts and practical information
Prohodna, often referred to as "God's Eyes," is one of the most stunning natural wonders in Bulgaria. This intriguing cave, located near the village of Karlukovo in the Iskar Gorge, is famous for its two equal-sized holes in the ceiling, resembling a pair of eyes watching the sky. These peculiar formations provide a unique spectacle as light pours through them, creating an ethereal atmosphere within the cave.
The cave itself is a monumental natural arch, about 262 meters in length, making it one of the longest cave tunnels in Bulgaria. It has two entrances, the Small Entrance, which is 35 meters high, and the Big Entrance, soaring to an impressive 45 meters. The size and shape of Prohodna make it easily accessible for visitors, with no need for specialized caving equipment, which contributes to its popularity among tourists and locals alike.
Prohodna is also a favorite spot for climbers due to its high walls and the natural light provided by the "eyes." The cave has been designated a natural landmark and is part of the larger Iskar-Panega Geopark, which showcases the geological diversity and beauty of the region.
The "eyes" of Prohodna are most captivating during certain times of the year, particularly when they seem to "weep" as rainwater filters through the ceiling holes. This natural phenomenon, combined with the eerie echo inside the cave, creates an unforgettable experience that attracts photographers, nature enthusiasts, and adventure seekers from around the world.
In addition to its natural beauty, Prohodna holds cultural significance, with evidence of prehistoric human activity in the area. It's a place where nature and history intertwine, offering a glimpse into both the geological past and the early human presence in the region.
