Laykyun Sekkya
Facts and practical information
Laykyun Sekkya, towering above the plains of Myanmar's Sagaing Region, is an awe-inspiring statue that stands as one of the tallest in the world. Completed in 2008, this monumental image of the Buddha reaches an astonishing height of 116 meters, including its throne. It is second only to the Spring Temple Buddha in China and serves as a profound symbol of the Buddhist faith.
The statue is part of the Maha Bodhi Ta Htaung monastery complex, a place of pilgrimage and devotion. Its construction was spearheaded by the venerable Sayadaw U Narada, a revered Buddhist monk, with the intent to inspire peace and merit-making. The Laykyun Sekkya is not just a colossal figure; it is adorned with intricate detailing, and visitors can enter the statue to find depictions of Buddhist teachings and history.
The Laykyun Sekkya, set against the backdrop of the verdant, rolling hills of the Sagaing Region, is a sight to behold. It is visible from miles away, a beacon drawing both the devout and the curious. The surrounding area has also been developed into a garden filled with thousands of smaller Buddha statues, which adds to the site's spiritual ambiance.
