Wat Ounalom, Phnom Penh

Wat Ounalom is a cornerstone of spiritual life in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, serving as the center of Cambodian Buddhism and the residence of the Mahanikaya order's Supreme Patriarch. This revered temple complex, situated on the capital's riverfront, is a sanctuary of tranquility amidst the bustling cityscape.

The history of Wat Ounalom dates back to the 15th century, making it one of the oldest temples in Phnom Penh. It was established in 1443 to enshrine a sacred eyebrow hair (ounalom) of Buddha, from which it derives its name. Over the years, Wat Ounalom has withstood the ravages of time, including the destruction of many of its buildings during the Khmer Rouge era. However, it has been restored and continues to be a focal point for religious study, meditation, and ceremonies.

The temple's architecture is characterized by traditional Khmer design, with its main building housing the treasured relic of Buddha. The complex consists of 44 structures, including living quarters for monks, a library, and several stupas.
