Chutes de la Lobé, Kribi
Facts and practical information
The Lobe Falls are located in the south of Cameroon. Located seven kilometers south of Kribi, they have the rare feature in the world that the Lobe River flows directly into the Atlantic Ocean. They are the major attraction of Kribi.
This region has large sandy beaches where two species of marine turtles lay their eggs: the leatherback turtle and the olive ridley turtle. The marine turtle conservation project is managed by the Centre spécialisé de recherche sur les écosystèmes marins of IRAD and the World Conservation Union. This pilot project includes a component of community assistance to coastal fishing villages, which is currently being developed through a partnership between the town halls of Courteranges in France and Campo in Cameroon. This partnership was crowned by the twinning of the two town halls in April 2006. CERECOMA is a structure created in February 2006 by the board of directors of IRAD; it is placed under the scientific authority of IRAD and under the supervision of the Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation of Cameroon. On the other hand, the turtles accidentally captured by the artisanal fishermen of Kribi are sponsored by businessmen or tourists, which makes it possible to compensate the fishermen and to save these turtles which, otherwise, would be killed for their meat and their carapace.
