Facts About Rhinogobius
The Rhinogobius genus consists primarily of freshwater gobies native to the tropical and temperate regions of eastern Asia. These fish are typically small, streamlined, and exhibit sexual dimorphism. While most species do not hold commercial value, Rhinogobius duospilus is a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts.
Currently, there are 66 recognized species within the Rhinogobius genus. Notable species include Rhinogobius albimaculatus, Rhinogobius biwaensis, Rhinogobius boa, and Rhinogobius brunneus, also known as the Amur goby. Additional species of interest are Rhinogobius candidianus, Rhinogobius davidi, Rhinogobius duospilus, and Rhinogobius flavoventris, among many others.
Interestingly, there are also four undescribed species in Japan that scientists are currently studying. These include Rhinogobius sp. 'BB' (Blue Belly), Rhinogobius sp. 'OM' (Oumi-yoshinobori), Rhinogobius sp. 'MO' (Mosaic), and Rhinogobius sp. 'YB' (Yellow Belly).
