It is one of the largest art museums in China, and is funded by the Ministry of Culture. The construction of the museum started in 1958, and concluded in 1962. It has a total land area of 30,000 square metres. The museum was renovated between May 2004 and January 2005, and has been given an additional area of 5,375 square metres. ()
