Shuang feng zhai
Facts and practical information
Shuangfengzhai is located in Shitang Village, Shitang Town, 19 kilometers west of Renhua County, Guangdong Province, China. The fortress was built in the 25th year of the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty by Li Zisheng, a country squire, who raised 30,000 yuan in silver to prevent bandits from looting. The original name of Shuangfengzhai was Shitangzhai, but later it was renamed as "Shuangfengzhai" after the meaning of "Shuangfeng safeguard" on the lintel of the front door of the fortress, which collapsed before 1949 and was rebuilt after the founding of the People's Republic of China.
The Shuangfeng Fortress is rectangular in shape, made of lime and green bricks, with an area of 4,164 square meters, a main building and four gun towers, and a wall 9 meters high and 1.2 meters wide connecting the main building and the gun towers. Outside the fortress is surrounded by a moat 13 meters wide and 1.5 meters deep, making it a rare giant fortress.
During the Revolutionary period, the Communist Party of China led the Shitang Township Farmers' Association, which was based there, and after 1927, the Shitang Township Farmers' Association led the military and civilians to retreat to the Shuangfeng Cottage to resist the then rightist Kuomintang's suppression for nine months. Shuangfengzhai is now a patriotic education base.
