Long Corridor, Beijing

The Long Corridor at the Summer Palace in Beijing stands as a testament to the grandeur of traditional Chinese architecture and the opulence of the Qing dynasty. This covered walkway, extending an impressive 728 meters, is one of the longest of its kind in the world and is a significant feature of the palace grounds.

Constructed in 1750 during the reign of Emperor Qianlong, the Long Corridor was originally built to provide the emperor's mother a sheltered pathway through the gardens. It was later renovated and expanded, and now it is not only a functional passage but also a magnificent gallery adorned with more than 14,000 intricate paintings. These artworks depict Chinese landscapes, folklore, and historical events, offering a visual feast for visitors and a deep insight into China's rich cultural heritage.

The structure is elegantly designed with a traditional Chinese gabled roof, supported by a series of wooden columns painted in bright colors, which adds to the vibrancy of the corridor. It meanders gracefully along the northern shore of Kunming Lake, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenic beauty of the surroundings while being protected from the elements.

The Long Corridor has survived several historical events, including the destruction by Anglo-French forces in 1860 during the Second Opium War.
