Located at Lion Rock, 3 km southwest of Maba Town, Qujiang District, Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province, the Shixia site is a Neolithic site that was listed as the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units in 2001. when the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units was announced in 2006, the Maba Man site was combined and protected.
In 1958, fossilized ancient human skulls were found in the caves of Lion's Head Mountain, which were identified as the early type of human fossils in the transition from Homo erectus to Homo sapiens and named Maba Man. 1973, another Neolithic site was found between Lion's Head Mountain and Lion's Tail Mountain, called Shixia Site.
There are four cultural layers at the Shixia site: the first layer is the Neolithic cultural layer about 6000 years ago; the second layer is the late Neolithic cultural layer about 5000-4000 years ago; the third layer is the early bronze cultural layer about 3800-3100 years ago; the fourth layer is the late Western Zhou period to the Spring and Autumn period equivalent to the late Bronze cultural layer. Within the site of Shixia, remains of pillar holes, ash pits, pottery kilns, etc. were found, 136 tombs were cleared, and a large number of artifacts such as stone tools, pottery and jade were excavated.
