Little red brocket

The little red brocket, also known as the swamp brocket or Ecuador red brocket, is a delightful small deer species that inhabits the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, and northern Peru. These deer are found in forest and páramo habitats, living at elevations ranging from 1,400 to 3,600 meters.

As one of the tiniest brocket deer species, the little red brocket boasts a distinctive reddish coat with blackish legs and a dark crown. Interestingly, experts once considered the pygmy brocket and Merida brocket to be subspecies of the little red brocket.

Historically, the little red brocket may have been a crucial part of the diet for the Pleistocene Las Vegas culture, underscoring its historical significance.
