Calle El Conde, Santo Domingo

Facts and practical information
El Conde Street, is an old street in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo. For a time it was one of the main streets of Santo Domingo, named after the Count of Peñalva. This street starts at two corners, beginning at the Puerta del Conde Monument, at the intersection with Palo Hincado Street, and ends at a stone stairway that leads to Francisco Alberto Caamaño Avenue. It is currently the only pedestrian street in Santo Domingo.
On this street was where the first concrete buildings, art deco and elevator buildings appeared in the Dominican Republic, such as the Baquero Building built in 1927. In this street is located the first city hall of America and the first cathedral of America. Today it is a pedestrian street full of stores, small squares, hotels, restaurants and tourist sites, but there is a contrast due to the large number of abandoned buildings.
In the old days, during the period known as the Dance of the Millions, this street was lined with small movie theaters and various hotels. At that time the street was decorated with pine trees and other trees that gave it a European look, while today there is a lot of Caribbean decoration.
