Teatro Sucre, Quito
Facts and practical information
The Teatro Nacional Sucre is one of the oldest opera houses in South America and in the city of Quito, as well as the most prestigious theater in Ecuador. It was built between 1879 and 1886 by order of President Ignacio de Veintimilla, following a European-inspired model, as it is an Italian-style theater. When it was inaugurated, José María Plácido Caamaño governed the Republic.
It is one of the oldest opera houses in South America, since it was inaugurated in 1886, before the Cristóbal Colón Theatre in Bogotá, the Amazonas in Manaus and the Colón in Buenos Aires.
The stage of the Sucre has witnessed not only the greatest theatrical and orchestral works that have passed through the country, but also served as a venue for events of national political life, such as the presidential inauguration of some presidents, the mayors of the capital, and other important events.
The Fundación Teatro Nacional Sucre, which depends on the capital's Cabildo, administers the theater, which although it was state-owned passed to the Municipality of Quito. The Foundation also manages the Mexico Theater, the Variedades Theater, the Mama Cuchara Cultural Center, the Foundation House and the Theater Café.
