Château Saint-Etienne, Aurillac
Facts and practical information
The Saint-Etienne castle is a medieval castle located on the height which dominates the town of Aurillac, in the Cantal.
Primitive castle of the father of Saint Géraud, it then belonged to the abbey of Aurillac until the French Revolution which sold all its properties as national goods.
After having been bequeathed in 1845 to the diocese of Saint-Flour, which planned to train its schoolteachers there, the castle was bought in 1847 by the municipality of Aurillac on the initiative of its mayor, Louis-Furcy Grognier, who had a vast building constructed there to establish a teacher training school which he entrusted to the Brothers of the Christian Schools and which remained in these premises until the father of Georges Pompidou.
The Saint-Etienne castle is now the site of the Maison des Volcans museum and the Centre d'étude et de protection de l'environnement de la Haute-Auvergne with a university research laboratory.
