The Montpellier City Hall was built between 2007 and 2011 from the designs of architects Jean Nouvel and François Fontès.
Designed as an open parallelepiped, it is one of the flagship buildings of the new emerging district of Port Marianne still under construction. This building inaugurates a new architectural style based on the notions of sustainable architecture more than ecological.
Before its location in Port Marianne, the City Hall of Montpellier was historically located in several places in Montpellier including a hotel located at Place de la Canourgue, from 1205 to 1352 a hotel located at the corner of the street of the Lodge and Place Jean Jaurès, from 1352 until the Revolution. After the Empire in 1816 and until the urban development of the 1970s, the headquarters of the municipality of Montpellier was located in the hotel de Belleval, place de la Canourgue, from 1816 to 1975 before joining the building in curtain frontage located place Francis Ponge, from 1975 to 2011.
Inaugurated on Saturday, November 12, 2011, the new city hall of Montpellier is located on Avenue du Pr Etienne Antonelli.
