The oratory was erected in 806 for Teodulf, Bishop of Orlean, Missus Dominicus Charlemagne. It was a private chapel, which is part of the villa Teodulf, originally built on the plan of the Greek cross inscribed in a square, thanks to which it had three three -span naves. The architect of the building was Odo, from Armenia, probably the same who built a palace chapel for Charlemagne in Aachen. In the 11th century, a fire broke out in the oratory, and therefore it was rebuilt. Subsequent modifications took place in the 15th, 16th and 19th centuries.
The eastern apse is decorated with a mosaic dated to the 9th century. This is the only mosaic from this period that has survived in France, and was found by accident around 1820 under a layer of limestone. The mosaic is 9 m² and consists of 130 thousand. tiles. He presents an ark of the covenant with two angels against the background of the starry sky, between which God's hand is visible.
