Facts and practical information
The castle of Voltaire is located in the commune of Ferney-Voltaire, in the Pays de Gex, on the French-Genevan border in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
The estate was for twenty years the residence of François-Marie Arouet, known as Voltaire, who bought it in 1758 and undertook transformation work. Classified as a historical monument since 1958, the French government acquired it in 1999 and entrusted its management to the Centre des monuments nationaux, which makes it accessible to visitors throughout the year.
