Collégiale Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais, Gisors
Facts and practical information
The Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais church of Gisors is a Catholic parish church located in Gisors, Eure, France. Its oldest part is the central tower that rises above the transept crossing. It dates from the last quarter of the 12th century. The choir was built during the first half of the 13th century in the Gothic style of the Île-de-France. Between the end of the 15th and the middle of the 16th century, the church was enlarged and partly rebuilt in the flamboyant gothic style. The second side aisles of the choir, the pseudo-deambulatory, the chapels of the chevet, the transept crosses, the nave, its double aisles and the tower on the left side of the façade date from this period. The large tower at the south-western corner was built in 1541, followed by the western façade of the nave. In a break with the previous parts, they display the Renaissance style. But funds were scarce, and the construction work was interrupted between 1542 and 1558, then continued very slowly until the end of the century. The church, and more particularly the large tower, thus remained unfinished. Nevertheless, its impressive proportions sometimes make it comparable to certain cathedrals in the north of France: 70 meters long, with a nave 24 meters high, it has approximately the same dimensions as the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Senlis. As a monument of remarkable architecture, the church was classified as a historical monument by list of 1840.
