Clocher-porche de Mimizan, Mimizan
Facts and practical information
Of the former priory church of Sainte-Marie de Mimizan in the French department of Landes, only a part of the western wall of the nave and a massive square bell tower-porch made of brick and alios, covered with chestnut shingles and topped with an octagonal spire remain.
The porch houses a portal built around 1220, one of the most beautiful sets of medieval sculptures in the Landes. It was classified as a historical monument in 1903.
Above the portal, under a pointed arch, is a 26 m2 painted decoration from the second half of the 15th century, representing scenes from the Passion of Christ.
The whole building was classified on March 1, 1990.
In 2000, Unesco registered the bell tower-porch as a world heritage site, as part of the Pilgrimage Route to Santiago de Compostela in France.
