Église de la Major, Arles
Facts and practical information
The church of Notre-Dame-la-Major d'Arles is a former Romanesque-Gothic collegiate church of the city of Arles in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. It is located at the northern end of the hill of Hauture, overlooking the boulevard Émile Combes to the east and the arena of Arles to the west. It was the seat of the largest parish in the city and is one of the oldest churches in Arles, since the original building was consecrated in 452, during the third Council of Arles, by Archbishop Ravennius, as attested by the inscription engraved on the façade of the chapel of Saint-Martin, which disappeared in 1592 when it was renovated.
