Tour Pey Berland, Bordeaux
Facts and practical information
The Pey Berland Tower, situated in the heart of picturesque Bordeaux, is one of the most distinctive landmarks of this world-renowned wine city. Serving as a separate structure next to the Saint-André Cathedral, the tower was built in the 15th century as a bell tower, to avoid damaging the main structure of the cathedral by the weight of the bells.
About 50 meters in height, the Pey Berland Tower offers spectacular views of the city of Bordeaux and its surroundings. To get there, visitors must conquer over 200 steps, which is quite a challenge, but the reward of a panoramic view of the city is worth it. From the observation deck, one can admire not only the cathedral but also the Pey Berland Square, and with good visibility, even the distant landscapes of the Aquitaine region.
The name of the tower comes from Archbishop Pey Berland, who was the initiator of its construction between 1440-1466. Today, the tower is recognized as a national monument of France and attracts tourists from around the world. Inside the tower, there is also a bell from 1869, named "Ferdinand," which is one of the largest bells in the country.
