Pont Saint-Bénézet, Avignon

Pont Saint-Bénézet, often simply referred to as the Pont d'Avignon, is a famed medieval arch bridge that spans the Rhône River at Avignon, France. This partially ruined bridge is a significant historical landmark and offers a glimpse into the architectural prowess of the Middle Ages.

Originally constructed between 1177 and 1185, the bridge once boasted 22 arches and stretched nearly 900 meters across the river. However, the relentless force of the Rhône and the passage of time have left only four arches remaining. Despite this, Pont Saint-Bénézet remains an iconic structure, immortalized in the French children's song "Sur le Pont d'Avignon."

Visitors to the bridge can walk upon its surviving arches and visit the small chapel of Saint Nicholas that stands on one of the remaining platforms. The experience provides not only a sense of the bridge's historical significance but also offers picturesque views of Avignon and the surrounding Provencal landscape.
