Château de Sassenage, Grenoble
Facts and practical information
The castle of Sassenage, formerly known as Château Bérenger is a historic monument located in the town of Sassenage, in the department of Isère and the region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and, formerly, in the province of Dauphiné. Built in the 17th century on the site of a former 13th century castle, the building stands in the heart of a vast wooded estate.
Historically, this vast seigniorial residence is the third to have been built on the same site, at the foot of the cliffs of the Massif du Vercors septentrional by the powerful lords of Sassenage, members of one of the oldest and most prestigious families of the Dauphiné, which was then a territory attached to the Holy Roman Empire, before coming under the direct authority of the king of France, after the transfer of the Dauphiné to France in 1349.
The castle has preserved its original furniture, decorations and paintings and its kitchen. It remains accessible to the public for guided tours during certain periods.
The buildings, the park and the avenue of chestnut trees leading to the entire estate were classified as historical monuments by decree on September 9, 1942. Since 1971, the Fondation de France has owned the estate following a bequest from the last member of the family who owned it.
