Church of the Assumption
Facts and practical information
The church of the Assumption of Conliège in the past constituting the Collegiate Church of the Nativity of the Virgin of Conliège is a Catholic church of the seventeenth century in Conliège in the Jura in Franche-Comté. It is registered as a historical monument since 2009. An earlier building than the one visible today would have been built in 1393. The first stone of the new building was laid in 1624. The cut pediment of the façade is a persistence of the Renaissance. Note the original solution taken for the high lights, both on the gable and on the north gutter wall which are circular "oeil-de-boeuf". The interior is of a beautiful volume despite the remark of A. Rousset who notes "Pilasters of a bad ionic order" and others "belonging to the Tuscan order". A reliquary is supposed to contain the remains of Saint Fortuné, bishop of Fano in Italy. This point could be discussed with the town of Hirsingue which is supposed to hold the blood of the saint in question.
